Motor and Speed
The Velowave Pony has a powerful high-speed 750W Bafang motor. The motor provides enough power to be able to reach speeds of up to 28+MPH when pedaling and 20MPH on the throttle alone.
Right out of the box, Velowave has limited the speed to 25 mph to be legal in each state. If it’s allowed to ride faster in your area, the speed limit can be adjusted accordingly.
The peak power of the motor is 1,000 watts and it can provide a maximum torque of 80 Nm. This kind of power is enough for climbing moderate hills.
You can use the bike for daily commutes to and from work due to the motor’s reliable speeds. However, it is better suited for offroading and weekend activities.
Battery and Range
The ebike has a removable lithium battery (48V/15AH) with LG cells and can cover a range of over 40 miles on a full charge.
However, the 40+ miles range can be achieved only with pedal assistance. When using only a throttle, the battery would last about 25 miles. But the exact range depends on the rider’s weight, the type of terrain, and other circumstances.
We made the estimations mentioned above from riders weighing 165 pounds. Additionally, the range could increase or decrease depending on the weather or road condition.
The bike’s battery is water-resistant and safe to remove or store. It supports fast charging and could take 4 hours to reach 80% and 8 hours to fully charge.
The e-bike has hydraulic disc brakes that provide great stopping power to keep you safe, especially when riding in traffic.
Hydraulic disc brakes perform better than any other brakes and provide more stopping power. This is vital in case of emergencies where you need to stop suddenly.
The brakes are incredibly powerful and provide maximum braking power even at high speeds, and their stopping power comes to play when offroading.
Often, you’ll need a bike with good brakes that provide enough stopping power. The brakes give you more control, especially for sharp twists and turns.
The bike has a 7-speed Shimano Tourney drivetrain providing smooth shifts.
The drivetrain helps you adjust the bike’s speeds to fit your terrain and weather conditions for a smooth riding experience.
The 7-speed derailleur makes the Velowave Pony perfect for people who enjoy racing through rough terrain or exploring trails.
It’s easy to change gears. However, the Tourney is Shimano’s cheapest gearing system. So it’s not advised to press hard on the pedals while switching gears. You have to be gentle with the gears to make them last longer.
Additionally, the gears have a less complicated build than other drivetrains, i.e., the 21-speed, and you could repair it if you are a DIYer or buy a replacement whenever it gets damaged.
Velowave Pony Design and Features
Frame and Geometry
The bike’s frame is made from aluminum and has a simple step-through design to make it easy for riders to mount. The aluminum material is strong and makes the e-bike durable.
As such, you could use it for offroading adventures on rocky terrain without being afraid of causing structural damage to the frame.
Additionally, the frame’s step-through design makes the bike accessible to all riders, especially those with mobility issues. Also, the step-through design makes the ebike beginner friendly and easy to get off in an emergency.
The bike comes in two colors – green and red.
Although the Pony has quite a high payload capacity (330 lbs), it’s not suitable for very tall people. If you are taller than 6 feet 2, the bike might be too small for you.
Lastly, the Velowave Pony weighs 79.3 pounds which is not particularly light.
The Velowave Pony electric bike has a front hydraulic suspension system to improve users’ riding experience.
The hydraulic suspension allows the wheel to move along the fork a couple of inches, which helps absorb any impact from a bumpy road. This helps the rider have a more comfortable riding experience in rough terrain.
The bike makes riding on difficult trails more comfortable and increases the rider’s control when navigating on uneven roads.
Wheels and Tires
The ebike has 20” by 4” all-terrain fat tires designed to make the ride smooth. The fat tires act as shock absorbers, which (in addition to the bike’s suspension) make riding easier and more comfortable on rough terrain.
The tires have anti-skidding properties, and they are also wear-resistant and can adapt to various terrains, including sand and snow.
The tires make the bike perfect for individuals looking to create amazing outdoor experiences.
The bike has a comfortable and wide saddle for the best riding experience. The wide saddle increases the surface area for the point of contact, preventing injuries when riding on a bumpy road.
Also, the bike has a comfortable handlebar with an easy-to-use throttle, perfect for beginners. Additionally, you can find a multifunctional color display from the handlebar.
The display provides information about:
- the power assist level
- riding speed
- battery indicator
- and mileage data.
This information helps riders understand their riding stats for better exercise results.
Additionally, the bike has a bright LED light that illuminates the rider’s path at night.
